This week's football games in the Tiftarea

By Steve Carter

Here is a look at what could be the last week of Tiftarea football this week.

Tift County is off and will play Colquitt County Oct. 30.

Tiftarea Academy at Southland Academy
Series Record: Southland leads 8-2.
Game: After falling last week to the Brookwood School, the Tiftarea Academy Panthers will attempt to garner their second win of the year in Americus against Southland. Tiftarea is 1-6 on the year, while Southland is 2-6. However, Southland does have a win in GISA Region 3-AAA, 35-13, last week over the Westwood School. Tiftarea fell earlier this season, 14-6, to Westwood. While it appears the Panthers will not make the playoffs even if they win out, Tiftarea could still spoil a possible playoff bid by Southland.

Berrien at Seminole County
Series Record: Seminole leads 3-1.
Game: After garnering their first win in school history over Thomasville (35-22) last week, the Berrien High Rebels are still alive for a playoff spot out of Region 1-AA. Berrien (1-2 in the region) makes the long trip to Donalsonville to face a Seminole County team that is 0-3 in league play. One of those three losses was 20-7 to Thomasville earlier this season.

Dodge County at Cook
Series Record: Cook leads 2-0.
Game: There are a lot of unbeaten marks on the line in this key sub-Region 1-AAA battle. Dodge comes to Adel with a perfect 7-0 mark including a 4-0 record in the sub-region. Cook has a perfect 2-0 series mark against Dodge, and in 2015 is 6-2 overall and 4-1 record in sub-region play. Dodge was off last week after defeating Appling County, 7-3, on Oct. 9. That same Appling team fell 35-0 at home last week against the visiting Hornets of Cook High. Cook's only sub-region loss is to Pierce, which Dodge has yet to play.

Fitzgerald at Pelham
Series Record: Fitzgerald leads 3-0.
Game: After a heartbreaking loss to the Brooks County Trojans, the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes look to rebound this week on the road at Pelham. A goal line stand by the Trojans, when they stopped Fitzgerald three times from the Brooks one with less than 28 seconds left in the game, caused Fitzgerald to suffer its' first loss of the year, 21-17.Pelham is 4-3 overall, but only 1-2 in Region 1-AA play, while Fitzgerald is 6-1, 2-1 in region action.

Wilcox County at Irwin County
Series Record: Wilcox leads 13-10.
Game: After facing off for a middle school championship game on Thursday, Wilcox will travel back to Ocilla Friday for a Region 2-A varsity matchup. After suffering its' first region loss of the year against Charlton, Irwin rebounded in a big way last week with a 54-0 win over Lanier. The Indians are now 4-2-1 on the year overall, and 3-1 in league play. Wilcox is 2-5 overall, 1-3 in the region. The game is Irwin's homecoming.

Atkinson County at Turner County
Series Record: Turner leads 9-7-1
Game: Even after falling for the first time, 30-16 to Clinch last week, the Turner County Rebels are still in thick of the hunt for the Region 2-A championship. But coach Ben Simmons' squad can't overlook an Atkinson County team that went to the state playoffs last season. Atkinson is 2-5 on the year, 1-3 in league play. This game is Turner's homecoming.

Worth County at Americus-Sumter
Series Record: Americus-Sumter leads 4-1.
Game: The Worth County Rams are 4-3 overall and 2-1 in Sub-Region 1-AAAA play. The Rams will be on the road against an Americus-Sumter team with an 0-2 mark in sub-region play. A win over Americus-Sumter will set up a big showdown against Thomas County Central on Oct. 30 with a possible sub-region title at stake.
