FITZGERALD - Led by JD King, the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes avenged its only regular season loss from 2015 with a 40-7 win Friday night over the Brooks County Trojans.
Brooks used a goal line stand to take a 21-17 win in 2015 over the Canes. That win gave Brooks the Region 1-AA title.
King was stopped three times on that goal line stand, and that may have given motivation for this year's encounter.
The senior scored four touchdowns, rushed 19 times for 120 yards and caught three passes for 86 more yards. He did all of that and only played two plays in the fourth quarter.
Brooks took the opening kickoff and drove 62 yards on an impressive drive to the Fitzgerald 19. However, the Canes' Quay Harper ended the threat by intercepting a pass in the end zone.
Brooks only managed 91 yards for the rest of the game, and only 16 yards in the entire second half.
After the Harper interception the Hurricanes drove 80 yards on 13 plays and scored on an Ethan Gordon five-yard run.
Brooks would put its only points up on the scoreboard on the ensuing kickoff when Deoveonne Bryant took it for 90 yards and a touchdown.
Tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter, King took over for Fitzgerald.
The Oklahoma State commit scored three touchdowns pass plays of 53 and 13 yards from James Graham. Those scores sandwiched a six-yard King scoring run.
Fitzgerald recovered a Brooks onside kick attempt to start the second half.
Two plays later Graham hit Montrell Harris on a 44-yard scoring pass.
In the middle of the third quarter Fitzgerald got possession on its 19 and put together an awesome 15 play drive to score.
King scored his fourth touchdown on an 11-yard run on the second play of the fourth quarter.
Graham completed 7-of-14 passes for 150 yards, as Fitzgerald put up 395 total yards in the game.
